Things to do in London in September 2019

Written by City Relay

Summer is slowly coming to an end and the cold, rainy weather will soon be back. But until then, you still have time to make the most out of the last sunny days. Here are our recommendations on the things to do in London this September:

13-18 September: London Fashion week

For the first time, this September’s London Fashion Week will open its doors to the public. You can now purchase tickets to stunning catwalk shows, installations, panels, showrooms and exhibits, including a #PositiveFashion exhibition which promotes equality and sustainability within the industry.

Furthermore, there will be lectures and panels about fashion trends with influential industry insiders, and many shopping opportunities. With dozens of events to choose from, there are activities and experiences for every lifestyle or budget.

14-22 September: London Design Festival

London is known for its well established creative industries, notably for fashion and design. Along with the London Fashion Week, the London Design Festival will showcase many designers from around the globe.

A plethora of events will take place, such as lessons, tours, and exhibitions, as well as special events at museums and galleries all around London. Most of them are free to attend!

21-22 September: Open House London

Following the London Design Festival, more than 800 of London’s hidden treasures will open their doors to the public for free during Open House London. There are over 30 participating boroughs, which means you are very likely to find an Open House near you. We highly recommend you check out No10 Downing Street, Barbican Centre, Guildhall or the Old Bailey pictured above. Many of London’s beautiful churches will also be open. However, do keep in mind that some buildings and tours require pre-booking.

Totally Thames Festival

Many events will take place throughout the month to celebrate the great river and all of its history. From art exhibitions, installations, to live music and performances, you will surely find something you would want to attend and/or participate in. We recommend that you do not miss The Ship of Tolerance, a 60-foot long wooden ship located on the Royal Docks. It was awarded the prestigious Cartier Prize for the Best Art Project in 2010 as its colourful sail is made up of silk panels painted by primary school children and refugee groups across the UK. It is certaintly a wonderful photograph opportunity.

Visit the Palace of Westminster

This is the last pick for September’s edition and it happens to be indoors, just in case the weather is not as good as expected.

The Palace of Westminster serves as the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two Houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. As they return from their summer recess during the first week of September, the public galleries in the Palace of Westminster will be opening their doors to visitors once again.

There are in fact many ways to visit the Houses of Parliament, including taking tours, watching debate and committees or visiting the Archives. There’s no fee to enter and it’s a great opportunity to visit a royal palace! To find out more about the ways to visit and planning your own, check out the official website: https://www.parliament.uk/visiting/
