July is typically the hottest month of the year in London and although British weather is often changing, you will surely want to enjoy your leisure time outside – and have a few safe indoors options, just in case. Here is our short selection of amazing events and activities to enjoy this upcoming month.
Summer Music Festivals
There are several festivals taking place in the capital during the month of July. Wireless and Barclaycard presents Summer take place on the 5th and 6th, followed by Lovebox festival a week later, on the 12th and 13th. Many famous artists and genres will be featured, from Solange to Chance the Rapper and everything in between.
Buckingham Palace tour
From the 20th of July until 29th September, visit the official London residence of the Queen, as Buckingham Palace opens its doors to the public throughout its Annual Summer Opening. You cannot miss touring The State Rooms of the Palace which are lavishly furnished with some of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection. Highlights of the Buckingham Palace summer opening include paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and Canaletto, sculpture by Canova and Chantrey, exquisite examples of Sèvres porcelain and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world.
World-famous sport events
This month, two great sporting competitions make their yearly return. The Wimbledon tennis championships will take place from the 1st to the 14th of July. The world’s best players will be there and the competition promises to be amazing, like it is every year.
Then, the London Stadium will welcome the Müller Anniversary Games 2019 as part of the worldwide IAAF Diamond League tour. Founded in 2013 as a legacy to the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, the Müller Anniversary Games is a world-leading athletics meeting which attracts the biggest names in the sport, and especially this time around as it is a key meeting in the countdown to the World Championships later this year in Doha and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020. Many great stars will be competing, such as the British sprint star Dina Asher-Smith and Britain’s golden endurance girl Laura Muir, along with other international champions like Sally Pearson from Australia on 100m hurdles, Christian Taylor from USA for the triple jump competition, and Wayde van Niekerk from South Africa on 400m.
Palaces and flower shows
This year again, the Royal Horticultural Society will be held within the grounds of Henry VIII’s palace the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. Coming into bloom in July, the flower show brings with it gardens designed by up and coming female designers; the Butterfly Dome, where you can wander through thousands of free-flying butterflies; the Show Gardens, a favourite each year with a spectacular selection to give you garden-envy; and ideas to get growing fruit and veg at home with The Raymond Blanc Gardening School. For something extra special, the preview evening gives you access to the show before its official opening with an evening of live music and a magnificent fireworks display set off as the sun sets behind the palace.
If the weather is not the best during your whole experience, do not hesitate to visit the Palace itself as well. Travel through over 500 years of rich royal history reflected in the palace’s varied and stunning mix of Baroque and Tudor architecture. The winding corridors, lavish State Apartments, expansive Tudor kitchens, immaculate 60-acre riverside gardens and maze together – where the flower will take place – make Hampton Court the oldest surviving Tudor palace in England.
